Active Playground Equipment Ontario belives that universal playgroun design is important for designing a commercial play structure with users with a variety of abilities. Accessible, universal and inclusive playground design are quite different from each other. Creating an accessible playground equipment alone can be as simple as adding an ADA transfer station. This, although in theory is accessible, is not universally accessible, as a user in a wheelchair cannot access the playstructure without major assistance. Universal playground equipment design can be completely different, and have their own specific design requirements. For universal playground equipment, we may have to add an accessible ramp for the user to get up onto the play structure or playground equipment, whereas, and quite often we design many components at ground level so children of all abilities can play together. The intent of accessible playground equipment, or inclusive playground equipment is to not just get kids up on the playground, but have a variety of play events for them to do when on or around the play structure.
